The Indian pharmaceutical companies are reportedly seeking the US Food and Drug Administration to issue a recall order for their erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, Pfizer said on Friday.
The FDA, which has a complex process to regulate the pharmaceutical industry, is concerned about the safety of its products, said Rajesh Kumar, a pharmacist at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in India.
The FDA's approval of Viagra comes as a major blow to pharmaceutical companies, with the drug, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, has been on the market for more than a decade, the FDA said.

A study conducted in India found that nearly five per cent of the men who took sildenafil or another PDE5 inhibitor for erectile dysfunction were also taking a generic version of Viagra.
In the study, men taking Viagra for erectile dysfunction were more likely to have suffered a heart attack and stroke, compared with those who did not take the drug.
The FDA has said that the drug is approved for use only under the "promises and conditions" set out in the label.
A similar study conducted in Germany found that more than two-thirds of men taking Viagra for erectile dysfunction had used the drug, while only one-quarter of men who used sildenafil or another PDE5 inhibitor for erectile dysfunction had taken the drug.
The FDA says the results are "generally considered safe and effective," and has "approved" the use of Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. However, it said the data is not conclusive.

Pfizer has also issued a recall order for the drug for failing to appear on the United States Food and Drug Administration's official website.
